In India they believe that only things covered with ornaments are beautiful. Poetry must overflow with rhetorical ornaments (alamkara), metaphors, alliterations, and other musical effects.

The verb alam-kara, “to adorn, to decorate,” means literally “to make enough” — for the simple appearance without ornament is “not enough” — it is poor, disgraceful, shocking, except in the case of an ascetic.

Hence the stress on adornment of the women, who are the poetry of nature.

Hand crafted designer sardonyx pendant

Queen Elizabeth had a beautiful sardonyx stone set in a gold ring and had her portrait carved on the stone. She presented the ring to the Earl of Essex as a token of friendship, assuring him that if he ever asked for help, she would be there.

Later, the Earl was imprisoned for treason and condemned to die. The Earl tried to send the ring to the Queen to ask for her aid, but instead it landed in the possession of Lady Nottingham, an enemy of the Earl.

Queen Elizabeth learned of his plight, but since he did not ask for her aid, she assumed he was too proud and so she did nothing. The Earl was beheaded.

It was not until a deathbed confession by the Lady of Nottingham that the Queen learned the truth. It broke her heart.

Wedding necklace of Vintage German Glass and Sterling Silver

This necklace made of vintage German glass beads was my gift to my son-in-law’s mum. She wore it at my daughter’s wedding to her son in Madrid this June 2011.

The mum and dad were gracious hosts to an international “mob” of guests – Spanish, United Statesans, Equatorial Guineans, and mixes of all, in the suburbs north of Madrid. Crazy mob of kids too. What a great time!

Gorgeous wedding, outdoors and inside the Spanish country house for 4 course dining and dancing till 5 AM.

On the coast where I could walk down the trail to dip myself in the Mediterranean.

Walk the alive streets and plazas of Madrid, wanting to know how to find or make those drapey pants that the girls were wearing. Of course I bought scarves, and more scarves.

Accessories win. And some of my jewelry was worn to the wedding.

The Price of Silver, the Value of Your Jewelry

Last year at this time, the price of silver was approximately $16 an ounce. A ring you bought last year for $30, is now worth $60.
Silver turned from a precious metal into an industrial metal, used to produce electronics. They started using silver in keyboards, computer parts and mobile phones. This huge demand is the main reason for the rise in price.

At the same time, there has been a big decrease in the production of silver, as it is a depletable metal. Experts predict the current price of silver will continue to rise, as there’s only a limited amount of silver in this world.
We predict that silver will rise to $50 per ounce, this year. Silver jewelry has officially joined its rank among precious jewelry with gold, diamonds, and precious gemstones. It has become a “wearable investment” – and there is NO coming down for its prices.

It is an established fact that the value of silver will keep increasing over time.

Antique Finish on Sterling Silver

Here is another picture of the black stone pendant from post August 18, 2010, but with the antique finish on the silver wiring. It gives so much subtle play with the light that I like it much better than plain shiny. I realize that most people like shiny though, so I’ve taken out my pieces with the finish and polished them up. When there is more degrees of contrast they just get better.

3 Real Turquoises on a Sterling Bracelet

Turquoise was believed sacred by Native Americans who saw that it held the blue of the sky and the green of the earth. And it was often with inscrutable markings that were like messages from another world.

In Europe it used to be that only men wore turquoise. It’s considered good luck for endeavors requiring fortitude and perseverance. (Sounds like Bilbo, the Hobbit, should have worn some when he went adventuring.)

But since most endeavors nowadays need fortitude (strength of spirit) and perseverance (Don’t give up!) it must be an appropriate gift, as its considered better if someone gives it to you.

These three beads are old and genuine, not like some newer ones. The sterling silver is hand forged.

Patina for copper with vinegar and Renaissance Wax

I’ve been experimenting with chemicals. To get rid of that too-bright look, or directly-from-the-store look, I left a roll of copper wire in vinegar for about a week. It turned it a lovely (to my eyes) mottled pattern. But then as I was using it, I noticed that the wire was sort of flaky, almost hairy.

My other chemical experiment is the Renaissance Wax that I just ordered. It comes in a little round tin (that’s British for can). It was developed for use by the British Museum to preserve and beautify the museum’s collection. I am so thrilled to have this little round tin that I have been rubbing it’s contents lovingly on almost everything.

Yes, the Renaissance Wax took off the loose bits from the copper wire, left the important mottles, and is preserving the lovely patina so it won’t come off, at least not easily. Ah, romance.
